A Capitation Dental Insurance Plan provides comprehensive dental care to enrolled patients to the dental plan through designated dentists within the plan. A perfect example of such a plan is a Dental Health Mainteance Organization (aka DHMO). The dentists within these dental insurance plans are paid on a per capita (per head) basis rather than for actual treatment provided. Participating dentists received a fixed monthly fee based on the number of patients assigned to their office. Its almost like a retainer fee for their availability to those within their area of service. In addition to the premiums, the patients pay a copayment to the dentist based on the fee schedule negotiated by the DHMO.
